Our Little Leader

We just got back from a great week at the beach with Molly’s extended family. And of course, no vacation is complete without some mishaps, right? Here is the funniest one, in my opinion. This information is second hand from the girls themselves, but I think this is the story.

Sophie has four girl cousins around her age (from 4 to 7 years old) and she always looks forward to seeing them at these kinds of events.

So the girls decided that they wanted to start a fire and make s’mores. Good idea, we are at the beach, afterall. So Sophie tells her cousins, “go gather wood.” Well, at a beach resort it’s often difficult to find good dry wood. So the girls, very proud of their ingenuity, rip apart the resort’s gazebo! They brought me arm fulls of nicely cut slats of wood, again, very proud of themselves, and asked if that was enough to start a fire with. Yes, the resort gazebo.

I didn’t yell at them, I nicely said “Girls, that’s very smart of you, it’s good dry wood, but we can’t destroy property, so let’s try to put these slats back. Well it didn’t work, I couldn’t put it back together, so we went to plan B. I told the girls to drop the wood and run.

I felt bad that they couldn’t have their bonfire, especially after Sophie told me that they had it all planned, that they were going to tell stories and one of the cousins had prepared a dance as entertainment. Oh, well.
